Last week we talked about an astonishing statistic that we came across that suggested that 84% of people polled intend to leave their job this year. We began to wonder why that would be the case? Could it be that they feel under compensated? Or could there be something else at play? Watch this Ted Talk by Dan Pink and it might begin to provide some answers, or at least some very interesting insights.

Dan suggests that what motivates people, at least in jobs that require thought and creativity, is autonomy, mastery and purpose, and not financial incentives. So money is not the reason why people feel dissatisfied in their job. In fact research conducted on behalf of the Federal Reserve Bank in July 2005 shows that in eight out of nine tasks examined across three experimental groups, the higher the incentives, the worse the performance.
These findings correlate with the explanation laid out in the book “Tribal Leadership”. We have been studying and working with John King one of the authors of this book for the last eighteen months. We believe that the key to keeping great talent is shared values. When people believe in the values of the organization they work for, anything is possible! The work we do centres on vision and values as the basis for producing exceptional organizational results.
Watch the talk and let us know what you think.
